Green Electricity
Switch Energy Supplier
Switching to a green energy supplier is one of the easiest and single biggest things that anyone can do to invest in renewable energy to be part of transforming the UK’s energy landscape for local, natural, sustainable energy. Some of the energy is even generated from people’s surplus home solar power and renewable heat.
A simple switch to green energy makes a real, measurable difference to the environment, and you can feel good that the energy you use isn’t costing the earth. It literally only takes a few minutes to switch!
Green Energy Suppliers
In the last ten years the green energy market has expanded apace and there are both dedicated energy suppliers and most of the major supplier also offer green tarrifs. Ecotricity and Good Energy are two of the longest standing renewable energy companies.
Green Electricity
Green electricity comes from renewable sources made by the elements – sunshine, wind, water and/or sustainable biogeneration. That means no carbon, no nuclear and no fossil fuels
Green Gas
When you turn on your central heating, or your gas cooker, you’re burning a fossil fuel that’s millions of years old. And, just with other fossil fuels it won’t last forever. But there are actually ways to make gas. We can in fact make green gas and put it into the gas grid, just as we do with green electricity and the electricity grid. Gas will eventually, over time, be made from organic waste material and algae.
Ecotricity are working hard to establish Green Gasmills as a major energy source for the UK. Until then all of the Green Gas they supply comes with a ‘Frack Free Promise’.
Good Energy also still supply gas because many of their customers want it. However, buying gas from them isn’t like buying gas from anyone else. They use some of your bill to reward people who generate their own renewable heat. So with Good Energy you’ll help the country reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and get a renewable gas supply.
Green Electricity + Car Tariff with Ecotricity
If you own an electric car you can switch to Ecotricity’s Green Electricity + Car tariff and get the equivalent of 1,000 free miles of electricity each year. For an electric vehicle to run emission free, one vital piece of the jigsaw is often overlooked – where your electricity comes from. We think electric cars – powered by green energy – are the answer. When you switch to this tariff you’ll enjoy the equivalent of 1,000 free miles of electricity, compared to their standard Green Electricity tariff.
Main benefits for electric car drivers:
- Green Electricity + Car customers will enjoy the equivalent of 1,000 free miles of electricity each year
- For customers who have both electricity and gas with Ecotricity (or just electricity if you don’t have a gas supply), you also get free use of the Electric Highway subject to their fair usage policy
- Free membership to Ecotricity’s Electric Highway to charge when you’re away from home
- Ecotricity have awesome customer service – they top the 2014 Which? Energy Consumer Satisfaction Survey.

Green Electricity
Green electricity comes from renewable sources made by the elements – sunshine, wind, water and/or sustainable biogeneration. That means no carbon, no nuclear and no fossil fuels.
Good Energy’s electricity comes from a growing community of over 35,000 independent suppliers across Britain, harnessing natural power from the sun and the sea, the wind and water.
Ecotricity‘s electricity comes from their own ‘Mills’ – the generators that they’ve designed and built themselves across the UK, harnessing the power of the sun, wind and sea.
There are other green electricity suppliers listed under the ‘Other Useful Links’ section below, but please note they do not offer 100% renewable electricity like Good Energy and Ecotricity.
Green Gas
Gas is not currently renewable but eventually, over time, gas will be made from organic waste material and algae. We can then make green gas and put it into the gas grid, just as we do with green electricity and the electricity grid.
Ecotricity are working hard to establish Green Gasmills as a major energy source for the UK. Until then all of the Green Gas Ecotricity supply comes with a ‘Frack Free Promise’.
1. Where does ‘green’ energy come from?
100% green energy refers to electricity that comes from renewable sources made by the elements – sunshine, wind, water and/or sustainable biogeneration. That means no carbon, no nuclear and no fossil fuels.
2. Is ‘green’ gas available?
Gas is not currently renewable but eventually, over time, gas can be made from organic waste material and algae and green gas can then be put it into the gas grid, just as we do with green electricity and the electricity grid.
Ecotricity are working hard to establish Green Gasmills as a major energy source for the UK. Until then all of the Green Gas Ecotricity supply comes with a ‘Frack Free Promise’.
Good Energy also still supply gas because many of their customers want it but they use some of their customer’s bill to reward people who generate their own renewable heat. So with Good Energy you’ll help the country reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and get a renewable gas supply in future.
3. Which UK companies offer 100% renewable energy?
There are several UK green energy suppliers who offer 100% renewable electricity; two of these are Good Energy and Ecotricity.
4. Why do we need to invest in ‘green’ energy?
When you turn on your gas central heating, or your gas cooker, you’re burning a fossil fuel that’s millions of years old. And, just with other fossil fuels it won’t last forever so we must invest in renewable energy today or we simply won’t have enough energy to heat and power our home’s tomorrow.
Electricity from nuclear power is currently the biggest single source of carbon emissions in Britain. Renewable ‘clean’ energy harnesses the natural power of the elements – sun, wind and water – which means no carbon, no nuclear and no fossil fuels, so works in harmony and balance with nature instead of damaging our planet.
5. Does it cost more to switch to a green energy supplier?
No, although prices will of course vary depending on each customer so for some it may cost a few pounds more a year but for many it could actually be the same, or even a few pounds less a year!
There are no grants available for switching to a renewable energy supplier, but you may be surprised to know that green energy can be cheaper than the Big Six Energy companies.
Good Energy Price Promise
Not only do Good Energy promise to match all the electricity you use over the course of the year with electricity sourced purely from renewables, they usually cost less than the Big Six’s standard dual fuel tariffs and they have been voted top of the Which? customer satisfaction survey 2 years running.

For customers who have an electric vehicle and both electricity and gas with Ecotricity (or just electricity if you don’t have a gas supply), you also get free use of the Electric Highway subject to their fair usage policy.
Other Green Energy Suppliers
There are other ‘greener’ electricity suppliers listed under the ‘Other Useful Links’ section below, but please note they do not offer 100% renewable electricity like Good Energy and Ecotricity, so some of their energy will still be from unsustainable fossil fuels.
